WikiLeaks Banned from Amazon Hosting

War Logs

Reports on Tuesday claim that Amazon has banned whistleblower website WikiLeaks from its U.S. servers just one day after moving to the service.

The cut off comes after the chairman of the House Security Committee, Senator Joe Lieberman pressured Amazon.

According to Mashable, Sen. Lieberman released a statement saying, “This morning Amazon informed my staff that it has ceased to host the Wikileaks website,”

“I wish that Amazon had taken this action earlier based on Wikileaks’ previous publication of classified material. The company’s decision to cut off Wikileaks now is the right decision and should set the standard for other companies Wikileaks is using to distribute its illegally seized material.”

Since the release of more than 250,000 sensitive U.S. docs by WikiLeaks, the government has beefed up pressure against the site, including making it the target of multiple DDos (distributed denial of service) attacks.

Attempting to avoid the attacks, WikiLeak recently moved its operations to Amazon’s cloud computing and hosting platform. After just one day however, the site is back to hosting on its Swedish servers.

Although Amazon has not given any reasons for booting WikiLeaks, many suspect it was due to pressure from the U.S. government.
