Twitter’s Major Milestone Still Just 1/5th of Facebook’s Glory
It’s not often that you see a website so popular that within five years of its creation, it boasts 100 million active users. But that’s exactly what’s going on over at the Twitter blog, when it was announced yesterday that Twitter had crossed a major milestone with no hint of slowing down.
There’s more to Twitter than just raw numbers, of course, as the Twitter blog is apt to show. World leaders like the Dalai Lama use Twitter, not to mention a gaggle of Hollywood celebrities and socialites. Top science men like Neil DeGrasse Tyson also employ Twitter in their weekly to-do lists. Even if Kim Kardashian has nearly as many followers as the President, you’ve got to like a lot of the participation and social networking Twitter has created.
Unless you’re Facebook, of course, the larger social network that boasts a world usage about seven times as large as Twitter’s. In fact, it was way back in 2010 on Facebook’s blog that they announced their 500 million user-strong network – today they come in at about 750 million “active” users.
Even so, it’s hard to say that Twitter is not a powerhouse of social media and a – forgive the pun – trendsetter in the industry. It also goes to show how a simple model can be employed to gain a large following quickly. It’s hard to ignore the power of a true social movement, and with Twitter’s announcement yesterday, it’s apparent that Twitter officially is a social movement.
But 100 million people already knew that much.
